Thank you for Sarah’s Couples Birthing Intensive

One of Blooma’s families recently sent us a wonderful letter thanking Sarah Longacre for her Couples Birthing Intensive workshop. With the couple’s permission, we’re sharing a few parts of their letter.

“A few years ago, if you’d have told me that I’d be doing yoga during my pregnancy and giving birth with a midwife outside of a hospital I never would have believed you…It just seems to be so non-traditional…but the funny thing is, the reverse is true! It is crazy how powerful knowledge can be.”

See below for more! Everyone gets something different out of Sarah’s birthing intensive. If you’ve taken it, what did you think? (And if you want to take it, the next one is Oct. 22. Sign up now under education/events!)

Sarah Longacre

Dear Sarah,

My husband and I want to send you our sincere thanks. We signed up for your Couple’s Birthing Intensive class not quite sure what to expect (“why were we going to have to do yoga during a class about birthing?!” “why should we worry about how to move during labor?…you’re on your back on a bed and you just push…” ”we don’t want to learn about mediation, that’s not something we ‘do’”.) But we left class with our minds so full of positive, useful, new information! It was extremely thought provoking — so thought provoking in fact, that we’ve since changed our entire birth plan!

… (In) your class when we learned (among many other things) about midwives and home births and birth centers…and more importantly the medical interventions so readily available at hospitals. That knowledge, combined with some of our own personal experiences (we’ve spent A LOT of time in many hospitals caring for sick family members) brought us to do some further research on our options for giving birth…

… We searched online for birth centers in the Twin Cities and found one in St. Louis Park. We had never heard of a birth center before your class. The following day, I went to yoga at Blooma in St. Paul, and after class talked with the doula who taught the class. I asked her if there were any other birth centers in the Twin Cities … She said, “there are two, and you’re standing in the second one.” I had no idea! We quickly signed up for a tour and fell in love. The midwives and environment at Health Foundations in St. Paul were just what we were looking for, all in a location so close to our home in Mendota Heights.

We’re now just over 3 weeks into our care at Health Foundations and have never been more comfortable in our pregnancy and birth plan. We truly can picture our positive birth happening at Health Foundations under the expert care of their two attending midwives. My husband feels more engaged in the process than ever before, which is such a comforting feeling for him. At no point in the first 33 weeks of our pregnancy could we say this.

And I don’t want to stop my thank you note there… I also want to comment on the prenatal yoga classes I’ve been taking at Blooma Edina and Blooma St. Paul. I “found” Blooma because I had been taking Pilates during the first half of my pregnancy, but there got to a point where I worried that some of the exercises just weren’t safe for a pregnant lady anymore. I worried about abdominal separation. My Pilates instructors agreed that without taking private lessons where they could modify the exercises for someone who is pregnant, I shouldn’t continue.

I looked around for a place that would offer prenatal Pilates, but to no avail. I DID however, find Blooma in the course of my search, and thank goodness for that… I have been utterly comfortable in each prenatal yoga class I’ve taken in Blooma because I know it is SAFE for me.

But I didn’t realize that signing up for prenatal yoga at Blooma would open me up to such a supportive community and a place to become empowered and more informed. I’ve taken a couple other educational workshops at Blooma and been happy about my time investment after each one. And, after every prenatal class, I’ve left feeling like I have new resources to go to (whether it be other clients or the instructors) if I have questions in my pregnancy. How wonderful it has been to spend the last couple months of my pregnancy in the company of other women going through the exact same thing!

A few years ago, if you’d have told me that I’d be doing yoga during my pregnancy and giving birth with a midwife outside of a hospital I never would have believed you… It just seems to be so non-traditional… but the funny thing is, the reverse is true! It is crazy how powerful knowledge can be.

You and the staff at Blooma have changed the course of our pregnancy and birth, unarguably one of THE most important times in our life. For that we are eternally grateful. We look forward to hopefully sharing an immensely positive birth story with you in the near future when our baby girl arrives!

Thank you, Blooma.

Warm Regards,

Sarah & Cliff

Tuning in about birth

National Public Radio has produced a slew of stories lately about birth. These stories mainly show up on an NPR blog called The Baby Project, which chronicles the journeys of nine expectant mothers throughout the United States. (One of those mothers, Emily, happens to live in St. Paul!)

Yesterday’s posting was a fairly straight-forward blog about doulas. Check it out. If you hired a doula, how did she play into your birth experience? If you chose not to hire a doula, why not? Would you do anything differently if you had to do it all again?

Earlier this week, there was also a broadcast story on NPR about “centering,” or group prenatal care, which is also an option at some Twin Cities hospitals.

Have you taken part in a centering program or are you a part of one now? If so, share your experience with the rest of us. We’d love to hear all about it! (And listen to the NPR story here.)

Kudos to NPR for this in-depth coverage about birth, in all its forms.

Blooma Birth Stories – two sisters, same weekend!

Some of you may know or have heard of Angie and Krystel — the two sisters who shared the joys of being pregnant together, attended Blooma prenatal yoga classes together, and even shared the same doctor. Then both sisters gave birth the same weekend. Amazing!

We are SO excited to share their birth stories below. Congratulations, mamas!! We can’t wait to get to know these cutie pie cousins when you return for Bring Your Own Baby yoga!

Sisters Angie & Krystel in bridge pose at Blooma's Aug. Bellyrama event.

The weekend of Nov. 13th was an exciting one for the Reierson family! On Saturday, Nov. 13, Angie & Aaron welcomed their beautiful little girl, Evelyn Terese.

And then on Monday, Nov. 15, Krystel & Neil celebrated the birth of their gorgeous daughter, Stella Marie!  All at the same hospital (Fairview Southdale) and with the same doctor! We had tons of fun being pregnant together and so much of that is thanks to the time we spent at Blooma! Below are each of our birth stories and a picture of the two sure to be BFF cousins!

Angie’s Story ~ On Friday evening, I started to have back pain with some of my contractions but kept quiet about it throughout a dinner and movie with family and friends. I came home and told my husband, Aaron, that I thought she may come soon. Sure enough when I woke up at 5 a.m. the next morning, my contractions were consistent and about five minutes apart. By 6 a.m., they were two to three minutes apart.

After letting our doula, Amber Kay, know how things were progressing, I took a shower and we headed to the hospital by 8 a.m. as the contractions at that point were back to back.

Once we got to the hospital, we learned I was 7 cm dilated. At about 9:45 a.m., my water broke on it’s own and I was at about 8 cm.  I did get an epidural at that time and it was the perfect dosage as I still had pretty good movement of my legs which proved very helpful later on with pushing.

By 11 a.m., we were 10 cm dilated but we waited until noon to start pushing as Evelyn’s head had not yet descended as much as we needed it to.  It was at that point that the back pain came on with a vengeance due to how she was positioned. Evelyn’s head had lodged itself sideways coming down and after two hours of pushing and trying multiple positions — hands and knees and on each side —she was stuck and would not re-position.

Amber was so great about helping with different pushing positions to get a more positive outcome. We unfortunately had to throw in the towel though and have a C-section as there was too much blood showing along with all of the pushing, which was causing concern that the placenta was rupturing.

Despite an outcome that we all did not want, I was so thrilled to have experienced such a wonderful labor and the birth of our beautiful baby girl. Everything that morning progressed as it should and I have great confidence in my body now that it knows what to do in labor and we are looking forward to our next birth being a VBAC!

Thank you so much to Amber Kay, our doula, with her amazing massage techniques and kind words of support, and Sarah at Blooma for her great birthing classes that we had so much fun at. Blooma brought a lot of joy to my pregnancy and for that we are so thankful!

Evelyn was born at 2:35 p.m. just two days after her “guess date” with a weight of 8 lbs, 6 oz.

Krystel’s Story ~ I had my week 39 doctor’s appointment scheduled for that Monday morning. Neil, my husband, joined me at the doctor’s appointment after he got done visiting with his niece, Evelyn, across the street at Fairview Southdale.

Little did we know that we would be back across the street at the hospital in just a few minutes. My water broke at my appointment and I was immediately wheeled over to Southdale. I texted Sarah, ONE of my amazing doulas, at about 10 a.m. to let her know that I was going to be having this baby today.

Contractions were not strong, so I knew there was still some time. Sarah was currently attending another birth with twins! Amber Kay and Angela Vincent, my two other doulas—yes, that is three doulas! arrived and we immediately started doing things to get my contractions going. Walking stairs, the birthing ball, squatting (my favorite yoga position) are just to name a few. Contractions were still light but dilation was progressing.

Sarah arrived around 3 p.m. and my contractions were still light. I was dilated to 7 cm.  Come to find out only one layer on my bag of waters had broken. Goal: break the next one on its own. Finally at 9 p.m., after much moving, around my water broke and my contractions hit a whole new level.

Sarah took me back in my cave (a storage room in Southdale) and I began to move inward. Contractions were one right after the other and the pain intensified. I could have sworn I was at a 10! But at 9:45 I was put on pitocin and was dilated to 8 cm.

My personal goal for this pregnancy was to go all natural. However, around 11:30 p.m. I caved and got an epidural at 9 cm dilated. Only 24 minutes later my beautiful baby girl was born and in my arms.

I could not have asked for a better birth experience. I will never be able to express how grateful I am for the support team that I had during my pregnancy. Although I didn’t reach my intended goal, I was very satisfied with how far I made it in my labor. I have never seen my husband believe in me as much as he did that day, which has only brought us closer.

Sarah, Amber and Angela were unbelievable with their support, knowledge and guidance! I am going to miss seeing all the pregnant mamas and Sarah each week, but am looking forward to BYOB :)

Stella was born at 11:54 p.m. exactly one week before her guess date with a weight of 8 lbs, 13 oz.
