I came across a fantastic post recently by Katy Says, a biomechanical scientist who blogs all about alignment. Sounds dull, doesn’t it? Turns out, it’s not.
This post is relevant for each and every one of us — especially if you’re soon to give birth or want to strengthen your pelvic floor (pre- or post-birth). The topic: squatting.

This demo shows how to do a supported squat while holding onto either side of door knobs. If your heels don't comfortably touch the floor, roll up your mat under them for support. (Photo from alignedandwell.com)
Anyone who’s been to Blooma’s prenatal yoga classes in Minneapolis, St. Paul or Shakopee gets to drop into a squat during each and every class.
We tell you how women have given birth this way for hundreds of years, how it opens your pelvis that much more for delivery, and how the gravity of this pose helps bring baby down.
Plus, it just feels darn good. Ahhhh.
Check out what the Katy Says blog writes about squatting as birth prep, and share with us: did squatting play a role in your birth experience? Have any mamas out there given birth squatting, whether on your own, with a squat bar or on a birthing stool?
Love,
Alisa, Sarah & the women of Blooma
